Brief Report on the 5th Asian Congress of Pediatric Infectious Diseases
The 5th Asian Congress of Pediatric Infectious Diseases (5th ACPID) was successfully held at The Taiwan International Convention Center, Taipei, Taiwan in conjunction with the 6th Annual Meeting of Global Chinese Association of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases during September 23-26, 2010 with the theme of “Combating Infectious Diseases, Step by Step ”. The congress was attended by about 2,000 delegates from 34 countries with 700 from Taiwan and 1300 from abroad.

The opening remarks were addressed by Professor Sri Rezeki Hadinegoro, The President of the Asian Society of Pediatric Infectious Diseases (ASPID); Professor Chin-Yun Lee, The President of the 5th ACPID followed by the children’s drum show. The Keynote lecture on “ Hepatitis B Virus Infection-Host and Virus Interaction ” was gracefully delivered by Professor Mei-Wei Chang, The President of The Taiwan Pediatric Society.

There were 4 Plenary sessions, 19 Symposium sessions, 4 Free Paper sessions with 38 papers from various countries, 7 Luncheon symposia, 3 Satellite symposia and 6 sessions of Meet the Experts. Two hundred and thirty-seven abstracts were submitted, 10 abstracts were selected for Travel Grant Award, 3 Young Researcher Award, and 3 Outstanding Research Award. The 5th ACPID highlights important issues occurring around the world, especially in four categories of subjects: traditional pediatric infectious diseases and pathogens, vaccine preventable diseases and vaccine development, emerging pathogens and new issues such as genetic susceptibility to infectious diseases and probiotics for infectious diseases. The 5th ACPID was a very successful congress with the turnout of 34 countries indicating how eager and willing Asian neighbors were to share and learn from each other. The 6th ACPID will be held in Beijing, China in 2012 and the 7th ACPID in Sri Lanka in 2014
